巴黎環城公路于上世紀20年代拆除巴黎原防衛城墻后始建。二戰后，法國經濟高速發展，巴黎車流量與日俱增，老環城不能滿足交通的需求。經過十多年的工程建設，目前的全封閉巴黎環城高速于1973年落成。

巴黎環城高速是巴黎城區與郊區的分界線，共有34個門（出口），全長35公里，寬約40米，目前每天行駛的車輛為200萬輛。它的限速為每小時80公里，由于車流量巨大，在上下班高峰和周日晚上，經常擁堵。正常行駛環城一周大約需半個小時，但碰上堵車，1/4環城有時就要行駛一個小時。
